At a parkrun recently, a little boy fell during his very first 5 km. An older runner stopped, cleaned his knee and handed over his water bottle before saying: "You are bleeding. That is good. It shows you are still alive." The boy got up and finished the race.

Seal Snorkeling Cape Town, via Secret Cape Town. Wetsuits, masks and expert guides provided; all you bring is the nerve. Cape Fur Seals are notoriously curious and playful in the water, and sharing the Atlantic with them is about as close to a David Attenborough moment as most of us will get. The water is cold in July but that is what the wetsuit is for.
Codfather Seafood and Sushi, 37 The Drive, Camps Bay. No printed menu: instead, waiters walk you through a display counter piled with the day's fresh catch and you choose what you want cooked and how. Sushi comes off a conveyor belt, made on the spot as inspiration strikes. Over 20 years in Camps Bay and still earning its reputation every night.
Grand Africa Cafe and Beach, 4 Haul Road, Granger Bay. A small private beach and wooden deck right on the water, tucked beside the V&A Waterfront with Robben Island directly across the bay. Five bars, ocean-view decks and wood-fired pizzas. In winter, the Atlantic light at sundowner hour is something else entirely.
