The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation has freed 41 Cape fur seals from entanglements around the V&A Waterfront since January, pulling fishing lines, box bands, and ropes from animals who had no idea help was coming. Every rescue is filmed and logged. The work is quiet, relentless, and very good.
Three England supporters walked into a fan park of 350 Springbok fans in full green and gold, kept cheering anyway as South Africa went up early, and left after the final whistle with handshakes all round. Joe & Co. on Kromboom Road in Rondebosch East smashes its patties on a cast iron plate set over charcoal, not a grid, and it shows. The Founder and the Showstopper both score in the high 8s, thick patties with a good char and a smash sauce worth the mess. Try the Phoenix if you want heat, it carries a mild kick without losing the mayo. Solid, unpretentious, and run by two guys who clearly love the process.
Rick's Cafe Americain on Kloof Street has Moroccan lanterns, a wood-burning fire, live jazz, and a menu that runs from proper burgers to tagines. It is exactly what Thursday night should feel like: a bit theatrical, not too serious, and warm enough to stay longer than you planned.
Yatai on Bree Street is Cape Town's most convincing date-night ramen bar: moody interiors, a serious cocktail list, and a five-course winter set at R349 per person. The kind of place that feels like a find even if you have been before.
