After a year at sea and 40,000 nautical miles, Cape Town skipper Dylan Kotze crossed the finish line of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race this weekend, joining a very short list of people who have sailed clean around the planet.

Somewhere between Cape Point and Green Point, one Capetonian is about to run further than most Brews would drive in a month. Trail runner Karoline Hanks is tackling a 192km loop over the Table Mountain chain in August to raise funds for Sage, a turtle recovering at the Two Oceans Aquarium after a run-in with a fishing net. Already halfway to her R80,000 target, fuelled mostly by spite for ghost nets.

A Western Barn Owl chick that tumbled from its nest in June has spent five weeks growing up on a farm instead of in the wild. Farmer Johan Van Rensburg tried a telehandler and a ladder before calling in the Owl Rescue Centre for backup. He is now fully feathered and close to flying home to two siblings still waiting in the nest.

Iron Steak and Bar on Bree Street is running a winter special, charred steak, side salad, and its famous beef dripping popcorn and salted caramel ice cream, all for around R240. Date night without the usual steakhouse bill.

Marble at the V&A Waterfront has added a Seven Colours Sunday Brunch, fire-cooked sharing plates, live music and a rotating colour theme through winter. A proper splurge at R795 a head, with four colours left in the series.

iPic Play in Durbanville has a sandpit built for proper digging, tucked inside its indoor adventure park. Twenty minutes runs R45, cheap enough for the kids to get pleasantly filthy while the adults recover with coffee.
