There are 113 of them, cared for since 1997, and Patrick admits he was always more of a dog person. Somewhere along the way, that changed.

Holland Bakery has landed on Pampoenkraal Lane in Durbanville, Dutch-inspired baking paired with proper artisanal coffee. Fresh pastries, a welcoming spot to linger, and one more reason Durbanville keeps building out its food scene. Worth a stop if you're out that way.

The Cape Town Silent Book Club meets a few times a month at a different spot around the city: bring a book, sit in companionable silence, then talk about it over a drink. Free, mildly odd, entirely delightful.

Khao Hom Halal Thai Cuisine on Imam Haron Road in Claremont is tucked next to a car dealership and easy to miss, especially with construction complicating parking right now. The chicken satay is the reason to go, and the tom yum noodle soup looks like the next order. Halal Thai in the southern suburbs, worth the hunt.
