Cape Town hospitality grad Olona Mafalala started out at the Amy Foundation dreaming of nursing. Three years on, she is interning in a French chateau kitchen in the Loire Valley, learning from the chefs behind Le Calabash. She trained at The Vineyard Hotel and recently finished her Diploma in Hotel Management. From a Cape Town classroom to a castle kitchen in France.
Golden Acre is getting a facelift. The CBD landmark, built on the site of the city's old railway station back in 1979, has kicked off a three year redevelopment under new owners. Work on the Piazza Level began in February. Same shops, same shortcut to the station, just a shinier version of a place most Capetonians walk through without a second glance.
If your green ID book is still in a drawer somewhere, start thinking about swapping it for a Smart ID. Government is pushing a full move to digital identity, and 167 bank branches countrywide, including several in the Western Cape, now offer Smart ID services without the Home Affairs queue. The green book still works for now, but its days are numbered.

Maria's Greek Cafe, Dunkley Square, Gardens. Running since the 1950s, with a sunny courtyard and old wooden tables tucked into one of the oldest corners of the city. Order the traditional Greek coffee, small and strong, and stay for the Yiouvetsi if you can.
Eye Witness Museum & WALL Gallery, V&A Waterfront. Free entry. A private collection of African art, two decades in the making, tucked away from the main Waterfront crowds. Easy to miss, easy to lose an hour in.
