Somewhere off the Crozet Islands, a satellite tag is quietly rewriting what researchers thought they knew about southern right whales. Nexus, tagged near Walker Bay last October, has spent months feeding thousands of kilometres from home and now appears to be turning back. Nobody knows if she's coming to South Africa or somewhere entirely new. Even the scientists are just watching and waiting.
South African schoolboy Bruwer's fan edit, "The Prestige Cup," has made the top five in World Athletics' Ultimate Fan Challenge, winning the Emotion & Legacy category out of hundreds of global entries. Voting for the overall title stays open until 14 August, and the winner gets to meet Usain Bolt and compete in the final in Budapest.
In 1928, a 19-year-old Albertus "Oupa Alvi" van der Merwe became the first player to score against a touring All Blacks side on African soil. Nearly a century later, his grandson is keeping that Springbok number, 221, alive through the family's wine range at Alvi's Drift. Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinotage and a Special Cuvée Red, all named after a try that helped write the early history of this rivalry, with the Boks facing the All Blacks again on 22 August.

Fact of the Day
In June 1895, the Signal Hill Noon Gun fired at 10:30am instead of noon because a spider had spun a web across the relay mechanism used to trigger it remotely. The whole city set its clocks by that gun, so for one day, Cape Town ran on spider time.
