An 18-year-old South African fan built a Castle Lager makarapa in Mexico, wore it to the Bafana Bafana match, and ended up with over a hundred strangers asking for photos before the day was out. Adam Schlosberg's makarapa went viral at the World Cup, introducing Mexican fans to one of South Africa's most recognisable sporting traditions, along with a rumour about smuggled beer that he laughed off and never quite denied.
Gerda Steyn crossed the finish line in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday with her iconic smile and a new Up Run course record of 5:44:53, completely decimating the field to claim a fifth Comrades title and cement her status as Queen of Comrades, in a performance the organisers called a display of endurance, heart and pure determination under this year's campaign motto, Ska Fela Moya: never give up.
And Table Mountain is back on the world stage, nominated for World's Leading Cable Car Ride and World's Leading Tourist Attraction at the 2026 World Travel Awards. The win rests entirely on public votes, open until 17 July, so go cast yours.

The A4 Arts Foundation on Buitenkant Street is free to enter and open until 5:30pm, the kind of gallery space that makes you walk slower than usual on a Monday.
The Book Lounge on Roeland Street is one of the city's better excuses to disappear for an hour, independent and well-stocked, open until 6pm.
Pauline's on Main Road in Sea Point is a neighbourhood coffee shop focused on connecting growers and roasters with the local community, and the kind of place that hands you a complimentary drink without being asked when they've run out of what you ordered. Flat white is solid, the people are better.
