An all-female team of researchers just shipped out for Marion Island, and they will not see dry land again for fifteen months. Their job is helping the seabird colonies out there hang on, one of the loneliest and most quietly heroic Women's Month assignments going.
The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation's marine wildlife team disentangled seven seals along the Cape coastline in July alone, two of them freed from fishing lures. Gill nets and discarded tackle are a major source of marine bycatch, and the team's message is simple: take your fishing line home, or use one of WESSA's ghost fishing line bins at popular spots along the coast.
South African 'artivist' Natania Botha has picked up her third major honour this year, the Women of South Africa Imbokodo Award for Art & Culture. Her mosaic sculptures, built from broken ceramics, bottle tops and industrial waste, have made it as far as the United Nations, turning discarded materials into conversations about the environment and peace.
