Helen Zille has spent the past few months turning infrastructure failures into increasingly unhinged content: directing traffic, snorkelling through potholes, rowing flooded streets, ziplining over a sinkhole. Now she has added DJing to the list. Over the weekend she joined Lady Lea at a beer garden for what appeared to be a surprise set, and the photos show a packed, very entertained crowd. Love her politics or not, the campaign trail has become genuinely unmissable television. The internet, predictably, has thoughts.
Cape Town graphic designer Yolise van Tonder has won the pangolin emoji design competition, and her artwork is now heading to the Unicode Consortium for official review. More than 3,300 people voted. If approved, the world's most trafficked mammal finally gets its spot on your keyboard, sitting somewhere between the lion and the rhino where it belongs.
Africa Rally teams have raised over R400,000 for charity before a single engine has started. Nineteen teams are competing this year, each fundraising for their own chosen cause, and with three weeks still to go before the rally departs on 4 July, they are already nearly halfway to the R1 million target. Last year's total was R820,000. The route runs 5,000km from South Africa to Zanzibar, Tanzania. Not a race but a points challenge, and the fundraising counts. Giovanni's Deli in Green Point has been feeding the neighbourhood since before it was fashionable. The charcuterie counter alone is worth the detour, and the build-your-own sandwiches and imported Italian staples make it the kind of stop where you go in for one thing and leave with seven. Proper deli energy. Affordable.
Frankie Fenner Meat Merchants in Woodstock is the city's most principled butcher. Ethically raised, pasture-fed, sourced from farms they actually visit. The cut you pick here comes with a story. It also tends to taste noticeably better than the average supermarket version, which is its own argument.
Intaka Island is a 16-hectare wetland bird sanctuary tucked inside Century City, which remains one of the city's most improbable facts. Entry is R37. You walk a boardwalk through a functioning ecosystem, spot over 100 bird species on a good day, and emerge back into the mall precinct mildly astonished that the place exists at all.
