Guests at Mabula Private Game Reserve in Limpopo got more than they bargained for on a recent game drive: a brand new litter of cheetah cubs, and a ranger who completely lost his composure about it. The mother is Q, affectionately known as the Queen of Mabula, who arrived on the reserve just last year as part of the Endangered Wildlife Trust's Cheetah Metapopulation Project. In Khayelitsha, Yannick Swartbooi found his purpose in the ocean. He grew up far from the water, but the 9Miles Project changed that. He is now a qualified surf coach who credits the waves with turning his life around, and he is working toward opening his own surf shop. Cape Town youth doing things.
At 19, Nathan Hendricks has already broken an African record in Paris and competed in four Paralympic finals. He does all of it with progressive vision loss and a white cane, and navigates both with a remarkable absence of self-pity. Diagnosed with Stargardt disease at 12, he chose swimming instead. Now he has his sights on LA 2028. A good one to keep an eye on.

Deluxe Coffeeworks on Bree Street is one of the quieter spots on that strip, tucked away from the tourist circuit. They roast their own beans and the space has that rare quality of feeling neither precious nor rushed. Good for working, better for not.
Woodstock Exchange on Albert Road became Cape Town's creative hub before anyone called it that. Design studios, independent brands, a few places to eat. Free to wander. Best on a slow weekday afternoon when Woodstock is actually navigable.
Yours Truly on Hudson Street in De Waterkant is the neighbourhood café that De Waterkant actually deserves. Serious about coffee, relaxed about everything else. The kind of spot where you go in for a flat white and end up staying for two hours without anyone making you feel bad about it.
