By presidential decree, chef Chantel Dartnall has been made a Chevalier de l’Ordre national du Mérite, one of France’s highest civilian honours. She is the first South African chef to receive it. She earned it by cooking South African food.

Espresso Lab Microroasters at The Foundry on Albert Road in Woodstock is one of Cape Town’s original specialty roasteries, operating out of a converted industrial space. They roast on site, which means the building smells the way a coffee shop should. The brew bar is slower than a chain, which is the point.
Addis in Cape on Church Street in the CBD has been serving Ethiopian food in Cape Town for over two decades. You eat with injera, share from communal plates, and the vegetarian options are genuinely the point rather than an afterthought. One of those places that has no reason to change and hasn’t.
The Crypt Jazz Restaurant sits in the basement of St George’s Cathedral on Wale Street. Vaulted stone ceilings, candles, live jazz on select evenings. Archbishop Tutu once worked directly above it. It is not widely advertised, which is half the appeal.
