There are 260 steps to the top of Cape Point. Fletcher Crowley knows, because his best mate Lachie Bennett carried him up every single one. Fletcher is a paraplegic after a mountain biking accident. Lachie is the friend who has been pushing and piggybacking him across four continents for 94 days. When the ramp ran out at Cape Point, Lachie crouched down and hoisted him onto his back. Internet comment of the day: "Is someone cutting onions?"
An 81-year-old former table tennis champion named Aunty Gadija needed a replacement wheelchair. When Cape Town's Project Rahmah came to help, they noticed the condition of her bed too. Within a week, the community had raised the funds for a new one. Her husband, Boeta Hajji, has been her devoted carer throughout. As Zaakirah Mohamed put it: "For someone who spends every day in bed, comfort is not a luxury. It is dignity."
The Two Oceans Aquarium's Trash Bash beach cleanup series is back, kicking off tomorrow at Sunset Beach and running across four dates through November. Free to join, open to anyone, and the kind of thing you can bring the whole family to. The aquarium puts it simply: remove the litter before it reaches the water, because once it does, it's someone else's problem and that someone is a penguin.

Shift Espresso Bar on Kloof Street has a slightly different energy from your average Cape Town cafe, with a quirky menu and a room that somehow balances laptop workers, meetings and actual conversations without tipping into noise. The staff are genuinely interested in what you are up to, the coffee is good, and Kloof Street being Kloof Street means a post-work drink is always one door away.
Neighbourgoods Market at the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock runs every Saturday from 09:00 to 14:00. Free entry, a very good floor of local producers, fresh bread, artisan cheese, Cape wines by the glass and the occasional live set in the courtyard. If you haven't been in a while, it's worth remembering that it still has the best people-watching ratio in the southern suburbs. Bring cash, bring an empty stomach.
Kanela Café in Sea Point is the kind of place where the staff remember you by the second visit. The coffee is strong, the cakes are a problem, and the whole thing is laid-back enough that a few hours of work goes by without noticing. Five minutes from the promenade, which makes closing the laptop considerably easier when the time comes.
