Hey {{first_name | Brew}}

Cape Town has a father-and-son team relocating wild bee colonies, a marathon runner making a point over 21km, and a seaweed with its own brand new genus.

Later in the week there is stand-up, opera with wine, and a rooftop of house music. Start with matcha or a diner breakfast and the gusts will feel friendlier.

Here's what's brewing.

Found bees in your roof or garden wall? A Cape Town father-and-son team has rescued and relocated more than 250 wild bee colonies since starting the Cape Honeybee Conservancy in 2018. Their latest save was about 40,000 honeybees living in a cement garden feature. The bees are moved to farms, including Radford Dale wine estate in Elgin, where they help pollinate the wildflowers and plants that support the region's biodiversity.

Alex Swartz, who has lived through homelessness himself, took on the 21km at Sunday's inaugural Nelson Mandela Marathon, the finale of a 21-day running challenge to show that rebuilding a life is possible with the right support. The distance is what the City says people living on the streets can walk in a day searching for food, work and a safe place to sleep, and residents are urged to give to registered shelters and organisations rather than relying only on direct handouts.

A new seaweed species has been named after UCT Emeritus Professor John Bolton, who has spent decades exploring South Africa's oceans. Mzanzia boltonii is a red seaweed found naturally only in South Africa, and it comes with a brand new genus, Mzanzia, inspired by uMzantsi, meaning "south". Bolton has helped describe 40 new South African seaweed species himself, and supervised 25 PhD students along the way.

Egghead Diner on Kloof Street is an all-day diner for early risers, laptop people and supper with friends. Doors are open 07:30 to 22:00 on Mondays, so breakfast and dinner are both covered.

Thirteen Ice Cream & Sorbet has been churning small-batch ice cream in Woodstock since 2013. The lucky 13 flavours include Salted Caramel, Halva and Lime & Ginger. It is on Woodlands Road, open 08:00 to 16:00 on weekdays.

Fact of the Day

In 2007, tardigrades flew on a European Space Agency mission and survived ten days exposed to the vacuum of space, the first animals known to do so.

That's your sip, Brews. Mind the gusts, it's a flat white kind of Monday.
