South Africa is getting another public holiday, Wednesday, 4 November, for the local government elections, bringing the year's total to 14. It's not exactly a rest day though, the IEC's rolling out nearly 40,000 voter-management devices and dedicated queue systems at busy Western Cape stations to try and avoid the long waits from 2024.
CapeNature has launched the 2026 #DontBeTrashy Drive, a month-long push to stop litter reaching the Western Cape's wild spaces. September brings school outreach, public clean-ups and waste education, all built around a simple point: clean-ups alone won't solve the ocean plastic crisis, stopping it before it starts will. Pick something up, use it again, speak up when you see illegal dumping.
Four Table Bay Scout groups set out to pack 9,000 meals for Rise Against Hunger Africa and blew past it, 10,152 meals in just over an hour, with more than 60 volunteers pitching in. That's enough to feed 44 children every school day for a full academic year, all from one evening's work.

Oatlands Cafe in Durbanville is a proper farm escape, open skies and shaded seating for coffee, comfort food and dessert. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays, worth planning around.

False Bay's Seal Island is home to more than 60,000 Cape fur seals, and it's one of the only places on Earth where great white sharks are regularly seen breaching, launching fully out of the water to ambush seal pups from below.
