CT Ballet: Orpheus in the Underworld closes its run this Sunday with Cape Town City Ballet's delightfully unhinged retelling of the Greek myth, set in the 1920s, complete with flapper girls, Can-Can dancers, Mafia henchmen and a penthouse swimming pool for the Gods. Choreography by Veronica Paeper, Artscape Theatre Centre. This is genuinely funny ballet and the last chance to see it. |

Silvermine Nature Reserve in the Constantiaberg is one of the city's best-kept open secrets. A full SANParks reserve with dams, fynbos trails, picnic spots and almost none of the crowds you'd expect for something this close to the suburbs. The Silvermine Dam trail takes about an hour and a half at a gentle pace. Free with a Wild Card, otherwise a small conservation fee. Saturday in June is near-perfect conditions: cool, clear, no snakes sunning themselves on the path.
Our Local on Kloof Street is a converted mechanic's workshop that somehow became one of the cosiest spots in Gardens. Plants, vintage furniture, piles of books on a long communal table, and a fountain that belongs in an Italian piazza. The menu runs from an Arnold Bennett omelette at breakfast to pasta limone and shakshuka through the day. Jamie Oliver approved, for what it's worth. Open Tue to Sat until 11pm, Sun and Mon until 3:30pm.
Kalk Bay Modern Gallery sits right on the main strip of Kalk Bay, sandwiched between the antique shops and the fishermen, and it punches well above its size. The gallery rotates exhibitions regularly and leans toward established South African contemporary artists. Free to browse, no obligation, and conveniently located next to enough good coffee that a gallery trip becomes a full morning.
