Hey {{first_name | Brew}}

A Cape Town to Joburg flight route has just been named the busiest in Africa, a Camps Bay couple got married with a whole neighbourhood behind them, and a South African in Florida finished second on MasterChef US with a marula mousse.

Later in the week there is stand-up in George, open gardens in Somerset West, forest bathing in the Company’s Garden and live blues in Observatory. Start with a coffee in Sea Point or a sourdough from SUUR and the 56 kph gusts will feel friendlier..

Today’s Brew is poured. First, a word from the people who keep it free:

If it feels like everyone is flying between Cape Town and Joburg, that's because they are. The route carried 3.4 million passengers in 2025, making it Africa's busiest air route, according to IATA, and the article says it puts it well ahead of New York to Los Angeles. The world's busiest is South Korea's Jeju to Seoul at 13.3 million.

Jestelene and Mzwamadoda tied the knot in Camps Bay, with a whole neighbourhood behind them. A police warrant officer walked the bride down the aisle, Primi hosted the lunch, and local businesses and residents chipped in with the outfits, cake, flowers, wedding car and even an original song. The couple are part of Ignisive's skills programme, working towards steady employment and independence.

Heidi Muston, now living in South Florida, has finished second on MasterChef US. When Gordon Ramsay asked what South Africans do with marula, she told him we drink it, then turned the liqueur into a mousse plated in the colours of our flag. The clip has been doing the rounds on social media back home, and we'd happily take a spoonful.

Hey Hey Divorcé

Comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout turns his own divorce into an hour of stand-up at The George Arts Theatre, and calls it cheaper than therapy. It runs 21 to 23 October, so there is still time, but it is in George, so this one is a Garden Route trip rather than a city plan.

01

mischu in Piccadilly Court on Regent Road in Sea Point has been pouring one house blend, Isabella, since 2012, and it is the only coffee they serve in the café. Open seven days, from 06:45 Monday to Saturday and 07:30 on Sundays, with breakfast and brunch on the go. A good place to wait out the drizzle.

02

Café Sonoma at Roeland Square in Gardens opens at 06:30 on weekdays. A flat white is R43, a muffin R25, and bringing your own mug knocks R5 off. There is a daily special on the chalkboard that is not on the menu. Dogs are welcome at the outside tables.

SUUR on Hans Strijdom Avenue in the Foreshore opened in January, and you can watch the sourdough come out of the oven from the shopfront. It opens at 06:00 on weekdays, a Portside Sourdough is R65, and Friday is Cinnabun Friday, which makes this a good one to plan around.

Fact of the day
Did you know?

Sharks have been around for more than 400 million years, which makes them older than trees.

That's your sip, Brews. Pack a brolly and a plan B.
