A UCT student who once thought juvenile arthritis had ended his sporting days is running the Nelson Mandela Marathon in October to raise funds for children with the same condition, and asking Capetonians to sponsor a kilometre from R50.
Cape Town will host the World Robot Olympiad International Final in 2028, the first time it's come to Africa. It's a big jump for local involvement too, South African teams have grown from around 40 in 2010 to roughly 1,800 in 2025.
Volunteers across Cape Town are helping endangered Western Leopard Toads reach their breeding grounds safely, from a road underpass project by Nature Connect to nighttime rescues pulling toads off busy roads. Small effort, big difference for a species found nowhere else on earth.

A colourful new spot called Oh Yum has opened on Main Road in Sea Point, an extension of Hello Asia serving the viral golden mango ice cream and other frozen Asian desserts.
Linko Restaurant on Lower Main Road, Observatory, is serving sushi pizza, a fried sushi rice base piled with salmon and all the usual fillings, for anyone who never knew they needed this.
The China Town Asian Food Market at Sable Square in Milnerton serves bao, sushi and dumplings from a rotating lineup of stalls, with pop-up dates announced on Instagram.
