Hey {{first_name | Brew}}

A 12-year-old swam from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand so his aunt could feed elephants, a 65-year-old from Kommetjie took back her world kneeboard title, and two NSRI volunteers have just clocked 55 years of saving people at sea.

Later in the week there is a UV Halloween night in Stellenbosch, steins and a best dressed competition at Killarney, live music in Kalk Bay and Wouter Kellerman with the Cape Town Philharmonic at the Norval Foundation. Start with a Liège waffle in Woodstock or a coffee at Mill & Press, and the early sprinkles will feel a lot friendlier.

Twelve-year-old Caleb Dower swam 7.5km from Robben Island to Bloubergstrand so his Aunt Cath could tick a bucket-list wish off the list: feeding elephants at Knysna Elephant Park. His target is R12,000, and anything extra goes to Careways, where Cath spends her days. Most of us struggle to swim to the fridge.

Kommetjie's Linnie Ash is 65 and has just reclaimed her world kneeboard title in Brazil. More than 100 surfers from 12 countries entered at Itaúna Beach. Her last world crown came in Portugal in 2022, so consider this a comeback with sand in it.

Pat van Eyssen joined the NSRI at 19 after being invited to a training session, and he's still going. He and Ian Hamilton, who helped start the Mossel Bay station with little experience of the sea, have both just marked 55 years of volunteer service. Pat now serves at Table Bay, and both have watched the NSRI grow from an organisation fixing its own boats with donated parts into a world leader in sea rescue.

Fact of the day
Did you know?

One Japanese bamboo species flowers only every 120 to 130 years or so, and every plant of the same stock blooms at the same moment, wherever it grows, before dying.

That's your sip, Brews. Go be nosy somewhere nice.
