Karoline Hanks has walked 192km from Cape Point to Green Point Rugby Club, roughly three PUFfeR trail races back to back, every kilometre dedicated to Sage, an olive ridley turtle recovering after getting caught up in ghost fishing gear. Donations for Sage's care are still open on her BackaBuddy campaign.

Krugersdorp amputee King Nipho is over 2,000km into a self-funded 5,000km walk from Pretoria to Durban, via Cape Town, promoting disability inclusion and unity along the way. He's slept at petrol stations for months, but strangers have started opening up B&Bs to him, and Gqeberha's Association for the Physically Disabled gave him a hero's welcome at the halfway mark.

The Great Southern BioBlitz returns from 27 to 30 November, and all it takes is a phone and an iNaturalist account to join in. Last year South Africans logged over 103,000 observations, more than a third of all entries worldwide, beating even Australia, where the whole thing started. Wijnland Auto Museum in Joostenberg Vlakte is the reason there's a passenger plane parked beside the N1, hundreds of vintage cars from restored classics to weathered relics, plus a cockpit you can actually climb into for photos. R100 adults, R50 for kids under 12, about 30 minutes from the city off exit 34.

High Tea Tighty has opened at Shop 12, Belvedere Square in Claremont, a brownie decorating spot that's genuinely fun for kids and adults alike. Worth adding to the family outing list if you're after something a bit different from the usual cafe stop.
