Noordhoek Beach picked up some tiny, very blue visitors on Friday night, with blue dragons and blue bottles along the high-water line. They sting even when they look lifeless, so keep shoes on and dogs on short leads.

The Cape Town International Kite Festival, now in its 32nd year, filled the sky on Saturday, and Cape Mental Health used it to start a conversation. CEO Ingrid Daniels said kites soar against the wind despite a fragile string, which is a fair picture of how many people cope. The organisation wants us talking about mental health every day, not only in October. Fitting, with the south-easter doing its part.

Two killer whales, a big male and a female, have made it to False Bay after a fortnight working their way along the coast from the Eastern Cape. Simon's Town Boat Company found them with help from land-based whale spotter Pete Morgan, and marine scientist Dr Simon Elwen's team took DNA samples and fitted the female with a satellite tag. The pair spent two hours alongside the boats on flat, calm water, so researchers should soon know where they head next.

Donny's on Main Road in Diep River bakes mini jam doughnuts, scones and koeksisters. Sundays run 08:00 to 14:00, so go early.

02

Olympia Café in Kalk Bay opens its bakery shop at 06:30 and the deli restaurant at 07:00. No bookings, so expect a queue on busy weekends, and order the mussels if you stay for lunch.

03

Bakhuijs is a patisserie at Seaside Village in Big Bay, open Sundays 09:00 to 15:00. One reader swears by the Gâteau Succès, which is reason enough to take the drive.

Fact of the day
Did you know?

A day on Venus lasts longer than its year: the planet takes about 243 Earth days to spin once, but only 225 to circle the Sun.

That's your sip, Brews. Look at the blue ones, but don't touch.
