Hey Brew,

Tuesday after a long weekend, and the city is still finding its legs. Cape Town just hosted the fastest marathon ever run on African soil, a Blue Moon is five days out, and a group of school kids in Hout Bay quietly did something good with their loose change.

Normal Tuesday. Exceptional city.

First, a word from our sponsor

On Sunday, Ethiopia's Mohamed Esa crossed the Cape Town Marathon finish line in 2:04:55, obliterating the previous course record by more than three minutes and setting a new continental benchmark. The top ten men all finished inside what used to be the record. Perfect conditions, Kipchoge on the start line, the city quietly writing a chapter in world running history. The fastest marathon ever run on African soil happened here, in May, on a Tuesday's worth of reflecting. The Mother City has form for understatement.

May gets two full moons this month. The first landed on the 1st. The second arrives on the 31st, which makes it a Blue Moon. The twist: it is also a micromoon, the most distant full moon of the year, sitting at its farthest point from Earth. So it will look about 7% smaller than usual. Rare? Yes. Blue? Almost certainly not. Worth stepping outside on Saturday evening anyway? Absolutely. Moonrise from around 5:45pm SAST.

Students at Hout Bay International School placed coin collection boxes around campus, borrowed an idea from a French initiative called Operation Yellow Coins, and quietly raised funds for Ikamva Labantu, an organisation that has been supporting township communities for over 65 years. Small coins. Consistent effort. Very Cape Town.

Songwriters' Showcase at The House of Machines on Wale Street in the City Centre. Original songwriters play their own material live, 8pm. Free entry. One of the better Tuesday night habits you could pick up.

12 Apostles Hotel Cinema runs a private screening every evening in Camps Bay: dinner, then a film in a six-seat room with Atlantic views. It is a slightly absurd level of comfort for a Tuesday night. That is precisely the point.
Today's Hidden Gems 3 finds

Just below the train station at Glencairn, past Fish Hoek, Glencairn Tidal Pool is the False Bay gem most Capetonians have never visited. Golden sand inside the walls, a waterslide, natural rock pools for the small ones, and views straight across the bay. Free on weekdays, R22 on weekends. You can get there on the train. Do not tell too many people.

Publik Wine on Kloofnek Road in Tamboerskloof is what a wine bar looks like when the people running it genuinely care about what is in the bottles. No reservations, no fuss. Artisan, organic, low-intervention wines from smaller South African producers. Open from 4pm on weekdays. The staff can walk you through every single bottle. That is not nothing.

Naked Kitchen and Coffee Bar at 2 Wisbeach Road in Sea Point is the kind of neighbourhood spot that rewards regulars. Flat whites that earn their price, a brunch menu heavy on eggs, and staff who act like they actually want you there. The Joburg original made it to Cape Town in 2019 and it fits right in.

Quote of the Day

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”

Coco Chanel

That’s your sip, Brews. Go find a window and look at the moon on Saturday.
