Hey {{first_name | Brew}}

A nine-year-old is off to Madeira for the world championships, the City has a reminder about fireworks, and a blind adventurer is about to ride 750 kilometres on a tandem.

Add a Gothic ballet, a picnic film night in Kirstenbosch and a boerewors roll worth the walk, and your Monday has plenty going for it.

Nine-year-old Karlo Marais has boarded a flight to Madeira for the Biathle, Triathle and Laser Run World Championships, thanks to a community fundraiser that covered the trip. The Grade 3 learner took home six medals from last year's worlds in Mossel Bay, three gold and three silver. He runs, swims and shoots lasers, and still keeps a 92% average.

Fireworks complaints are already climbing ahead of Guy Fawkes and Diwali, with the City logging at least 62 in the first three weeks of October, up from nine in September. The City's reminder is that there are no designated fireworks sites in Cape Town, so letting them off in a public space or street can get you fined.

Hein Wagner, who is blind and holds the world blind land speed record at 322.52 km/h, is taking on the Nedbank Gravel Burn: seven days, about 750 kilometres and more than 10,000 metres of climbing, on a tandem with a sighted pilot. The ride is raising funds for the Hein Wagner Academy, which trains blind and visually impaired South Africans for work and independent living. We're cheering him on for every kilometre.

Fact of the day
Did you know?

Sea otters have a loose flap of skin under each forearm that works as a pocket, and many keep a favourite rock in it, sometimes the same one for months or years.

That's your sip, Brews. Keep a brolly close for the odd shower.
