Hey {{first_name | Brew}}

A 69-year-old is pedalling a go-kart from Johannesburg to Cape Town, a Blouberg waiter just got hearing aids from the bosses who arranged them, and Kloof Road should finally reopen by mid-December.

It’s a calm, partly sunny 22° out there, and Halloween is Saturday, so the costume deadline is officially here.

Today’s Brew is poured. First, a word from the people who keep it free:

A 69-year-old Brazilian known as Zé do Pedal is pedalling a go-kart from Johannesburg to Cape Town. José Geraldo de Souza Castro set off on 25 October on a 1,500km trip to raise money and awareness for children with cancer, supporting the CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation. He's now on day three, heading towards Westonaria, with about 37 days planned in total. If you see a pedal-powered go-kart, wave.

Arnold has waited tables at a Blouberg steakhouse for two years while living with progressive hearing loss. His bosses, Otto and Sean, spent three months with Cape Town specialists until he was fitted with hearing aids that suit him. His smile is even bigger now, apparently.

Anyone who has been taking the long way between Camps Bay and Sea Point can exhale, because Kloof Road should reopen by mid-December after more than three years closed following the September 2023 storm. No new lanes, just the road you remember.

I visited Shift Espresso Bar at Canal Walk for the first time recently and loved it. The salmon bagel was top tier, the coffee was good and the service was excellent. It's halaal, on the upper level near Entrance 8, and open 09:00 to 21:00 daily.

Rose Cottage Café in Harfield Village, Claremont, is dressed in roses and floral paintings, with ciabatta, sourdough and desserts baked fresh each morning. Breakfast starts at R65, and it opens Tuesday to Sunday from 07:00 to 15:00.

Ceremony, the matcha brand Mikayla McClean started in 2022, has just opened a new store on Bree Street at the Movement Lab. It's a daily matcha ritual in a brand-new space, so it's a good excuse to skip the usual flat white.

Fact of the day
Did you know?

The top of the Eiffel Tower can lean up to 18 cm away from the sun, because the metal on the sunny side expands as it heats.

That's your sip, Brews. Wear a costume, or at least a cardigan.
