Something quietly remarkable is happening at Boulders Beach. Researchers have counted 790 African penguin breeding pairs this season, 92 more than last year, making it one of the most encouraging population counts the colony has seen in years. Small steps, flipper by flipper.
A donkey in Kempton Park wandered off, fell into an uncovered hole, and waited patiently while five SPCA inspectors figured out how to get her back out. There were tears of joy when she finally stood up and walked home, reportedly unbothered and already thinking about carrots.

No Wi-Fi, minimal signage, a counter and a couch, and some of the best espresso in the city. Founded by a couple of guys from the film industry, it still runs on the same quiet principles it started with in 2009. Worth knowing about on a grey Monday.
Rust en Vreugd on Buitenkant Street is an 18th-century Cape Dutch homestead that most Capetonians have walked past without going in. Free to visit, the William Fehr collection inside is one of the city's quieter cultural arguments for staying curious. Old Cape landscapes, good light, no crowds. A proper winter afternoon find.
Pauline's Coffee at Longkloof Studios, tucked off Kloof Street in Gardens, is the kind of neighbourhood coffee stop that creative types quietly depend on. The Longkloof campus is a cluster of studios and small offices that feels nothing like the city outside, and the coffee is exactly right. Affordable, low-key, worth the detour.
