Happy Halloween {{first_name | Brew}} 🎃

Cape Town has just waved off 17,346 Rooibos seeds, bound for the International Space Station, so space tea may be a real thing soon. Back on the ground, the city has a new neighbour in the trees, the African harrier-hawk, and UCT wants your sightings.

Looking ahead, you can get your horror fix on Monday with The Convent at The Labia, catch Desert Chess at Artscape on Tuesday, browse The Farm Village Market in Noordhoek on Wednesday, and end the week with Steenberg Comedy Night on Thursday.

A South African sailing charity has made the final four for the 2026 World Sailing 11th Hour Racing Impact Award, and it needs votes. The Little Optimist Trust uses sailing to build confidence in kids who might never otherwise get on a boat. Voting closes at 14:00 on Monday 2 November, so a quick vote on the World Sailing Awards page is all it takes.

Cape Town has just waved off 17,346 Rooibos seeds, bound for the International Space Station. The Rooibos in Space project is the first time seeds from a South African indigenous plant will make the trip, and they're due to fly between December and January. When they come back, learners in the Cederberg and at Parklands College will grow them for 18 months and compare them with seeds that stayed on Earth. Space tea, anyone?

Cape Town has a new neighbour in the trees: the African harrier-hawk, a raptor with legs that bend both ways, which lets it reach into nest holes. It wasn't known to breed in the city until the early 2000s, and nests have now turned up from Simon's Town to Durbanville. UCT researchers are studying how they've settled in and have asked residents to report sightings. They've had more than 1,000 so far and confirmed 13 nests, but think there are more. Keep your eyes up, and your drones down.

Fact of the day
Did you know?

Wombats are the only known animals that produce cube-shaped droppings, thanks to uneven stiffness along their intestines.

That's your sip, Brews. Dress up or don't, the coffee judges no one.
