A designer made himself a pair of camouflage trousers out of an old tent, wore them to the shop, and got stopped by soldiers who reckoned the fabric looked a little too official. Zughdi Mohammed says the canvas had been lying at a friend's place for years before he cut it into something wearable, and he handed the trousers over rather than argue the point on the pavement. He would quite like them back. The line between recycled camo and regulation kit turns out to be thinner than anyone expected.
Eight current Curro learners and alumni have earned selection for the 2026 World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, running 5 to 9 August. Among them, Michaela Spocter leads the African U20 high jump rankings at 1.81m, and Mukona Manavhela heads over off a 200m gold and 100m silver at the ASA Age Group Championships. A strong showing for a school athletics programme punching well above its weight.
Sixty Grade 6 learners from Christmas Tinto Primary swapped the classroom for the coastline, joining a beach clean-up at the Helderberg Marine Protected Area ahead of International Marine Protected Areas Day. The lesson: litter left inland works its way through rivers and stormwater into the ocean, so keeping neighbourhoods clean matters just as much as the coastline itself. Residents get their own shot at it on International Coastal Cleanup Day, 19 September.
