Hey {{first_name | Brew}}

A South African fireworks crew is world champion, the Western Cape sweeps the Dineplan awards, and researchers found some unwelcome yeast in the Eerste River.

After that, four plans for the week and three food and drink finds.

Fireworks for Africa has been crowned 2026 World Fireworks champion in Blackpool, England, its second title after winning in 2017. Its music-synchronised display lit up the seafront on 26 September, and judges singled out the soundtrack and the use of single-colour fireworks. Germany's show was cancelled because of bad weather, so the win was decided on the two displays that went ahead. A good way to fly the flag abroad.

The Western Cape has nine of the top ten spots in the 2026 Dineplan Reviewers' Choice Awards, plus 18 of the top 20 and 82 restaurants overall. Diners vote with their bookings, so the neighbourhood spot you visit every other week beats the anniversary splurge. Your regular table just got a trophy.

Stellenbosch University researchers have found living, medically important yeasts in the Eerste River, including Candida albicans, which the World Health Organization lists as a critical-priority fungal pathogen. Dr Cleo Conacher's team has been testing the water since 2020 and wants to know whether changes in these yeasts could work as an early warning for infection risk. Surveys found children are the group most often in contact with the river, which will shape who any warning needs to reach. A prototype device that collects and analyses samples automatically is still in development.
