Hey {{first_name | Brew}}

It’s election day, so if you’re registered, go and vote before anything else, because it matters and it takes less time than your coffee order.

Once your thumb is inked, there are freebies waiting at Krispy Kreme and Wimpy, plus a woman in her seventies who repainted 153 yellow feet on Table Mountain and a penguin with some very quick-thinking lifeguards in its corner.

We’ve also got four events to book before the weekend and two new spots to eat and drink.

Today’s Brew is poured. First, a word from the people who keep it free:

Two days of free email tactics, starting Nov 12

  • Sessions from world-class marketers at top brands

  • Networking every day

  • DJs, world-record breaking, and an alarming amount of rom-com fun!

Hanalie, in her seventies, spotted that the little yellow feet marking the trail near Maclear's Beacon had faded. So she bought a cable car ticket and repainted 153 of them in four hours, WET PAINT sign and all. Next misty hike, follow her handiwork.

Young lifeguards at Big Bay spotted a cold, malnourished juvenile African penguin on Sunday and called SANCCOB, who took it in. The species is critically endangered, so every bird counts. When penguins overheat, the glands above their eyes flush pink. Hotter penguin, pinker eyebrows.

It's voting day, and some places reward the inked thumb. Krispy Kreme is giving voters a free Original Glazed doughnut, Wimpy has a free coffee or hot chocolate, and Zuney at Makers Landing in the V&A Waterfront serves free fries for dine-in. Check the terms first.

Hidden gems 3 finds
01

Thickplot says it has launched Cape Town's first high-protein frozen yoghurt, made from its own strained yoghurt with no added protein powders, and it's running another pop-up at 67A Regent Road in Sea Point. The machine starts at 14:00 and runs until they sell out. Two scoops with three toppings is R88, and three scoops with unlimited toppings is R111. It's refined sugar-free and gluten free, and you can take yoghurt pots home too.

02

Crust at 1A Duke Road in Rondebosch is a small, affordable café known for its bacon and cheese focaccia (listed at R88), good coffee hot or iced, and a sweet treats counter that changes every day. It's open Monday to Friday 07:30 to 15:30 and Saturday 08:30 to 13:00, and closed Sundays. It's tiny, so seating isn't guaranteed, and they're cashless, so bring your card.

03

Cozco Mediterranean on Main Road in Sea Point is a cafe by day and a Mediterranean restaurant by night. Lunch runs to 16:00, dinner to 22:00, with mezze like stuffed eggplant.

Fact of the day
Did you know?

Fred Baur, who designed the Pringles can, asked for some of his ashes to be buried in one, and when he died in 2008 his family did exactly that.

That's your sip, Brews. Mind the ink on your thumb and the queue for doughnuts.
