A global survey of 2,400 travellers across 12 countries has crowned South Africans the world's most wildlife-obsessed travellers, 95% say seeing animals shapes where they holiday, putting the country top of the global ranking. Australia edges us for best destination, but South Africa comes in second. No complaints.
Floods in the Kruger disrupted traditional elephant migration routes, pushing herds into neighbouring villages. Hot Cares responded with a R79,000 donation to Elephants Alive, funding satellite tracking collars that let conservationists intervene before elephants reach communities. Non-lethal, non-negotiable.
Cape Town’s all-women sailing squad, Team Granate, has been named Africa’s only entry in the inaugural NYYC Women’s International Championship in Newport, Rhode Island this September, one of just 20 teams selected globally. Hokey Poke (Church Street, CBD): poke bowls done properly. Build your own from salmon, avocado, edamame and more, or let the set bowls do the thinking. Healthy, genuinely filling, and one of the nicest lunches going in the City Bowl.
Lekker (Kalk Bay): a little café in a seafront village that earns its name. The mains hold up, the coffee is solid, and the red velvet cake is the real reason you’re there. Perfect pit-stop en route to Simon’s Town or Boulders.
