Volunteers planted 300 indigenous saplings in Newlands Forest this weekend, building on last year's rehabilitation efforts. The project adds to a growing patchwork of regreening work across the Peninsula, one tree at a time.
For 18 years, Arnold Sodinga paid off a home loan he believed was nearly settled. When his employer's family discovered he still owed R55,000 despite paying back far more than the original amount, they took the story public. Ten days later, Standard Bank wrote off the balance entirely. Arnold is debt-free and gets to retire in his home.
A whale made an unscheduled stop in Table Bay Harbour this week, surfacing close enough to the waterfront to stop people mid-stride. June is when they arrive, but usually not quite this close. Right on time, wrong address. |

Chester's Got Talent, Ground Culture Cafe, Observatory. Ventriloquist Conrad Koch brings Chester the Cheeky Monkey and a cast of puppet performers for a variety show that is a little chaotic, very funny, and genuinely family-friendly. Book ahead. |
13:30 Free |
Kaas Kween: Commit to the Bit, Infusion Social Club, Durbanville. A free afternoon of comedy improv. These shows are loose, interactive, and tend to go somewhere unexpected. Turn up with no expectations and you will almost certainly have a good time. |
20:00 Free |
Songwriters' Showcase, The House of Machines, Shortmarket Street, City Centre. Seven years running, this is THoM's own Tuesday night stage — original songs, rotating performers, and a room that takes the music seriously without taking itself too seriously. Free entry, 18+. |

Montebello Design Centre, 31 Newlands Avenue, Newlands. Free entry. A cluster of working studios, small-batch makers, and galleries set in a heritage garden. Ceramicists, textile artists, and furniture designers work here side by side. Walk in for free, watch people make things, browse without pressure.
Honest Chocolate Café, 64a Wale Street, CBD. Small, unhurried, and smells the way a café should. Everything here is made from bean-to-bar chocolate sourced from single-origin African cacao. Order a drinking chocolate and something from the counter and take your time. Mains and drinks around R60 to R120.
Rust en Vreugd, 78 Buitenkant Street, CBD. R60/p. One of the oldest surviving Cape Dutch manor houses in the city, now run by Iziko and housing a quietly remarkable collection of 18th and 19th century watercolours and prints of the Cape. Almost nobody goes. That is the point.
