A patch of Cape Flats wetland once written off as a crime hotspot, and nearly lost to a shopping mall, has spent a decade fighting its way back. Princess Vlei now has a 4.23km trail, new boardwalks, and 17 reintroduced plant species after a R10-million rehabilitation, and a Lotus High School eco-club plants trees where a parking lot almost went instead.
Seven Western Cape high schoolers have won the International Space Settlement Design Competition at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, South Africa's first-ever finals appearance and the only African team in the room. Their design, Hermes, a spacecraft for ferrying 3,000 people across the inner Solar System, beat out entries from the UK, Australia, Brazil, China and the US. As one team member put it, the talent was never missing in South Africa, the opportunity was.
Parliament's rebuild after the 2022 fire is now 76% complete on the National Assembly building, with R2.43 billion of the R4.68 billion budget spent so far, still within budget despite the delays. The goal is to have it ready for next year's SONA and Budget Speech, though the wider project's completion date has slipped to June 2027.

License to Grill, a 007-themed restaurant and cocktail bar in Phesantekraal, Durbanville, pulls off a boujee Copper Club vibe with a proper cocktail lounge upstairs, while still being genuinely kid-friendly downstairs. Rare combo, ask about high chairs and a kids' menu when you book.

Fact of the Day
Cape Town's grandest old Cape Dutch style civic buildings, including the Old Supreme Court, were actually designed by a Frenchman. Louis-Michel Thibault trained at Paris's Royal Academy of Architecture before becoming the Cape Colony's first professionally trained architect in 1783.
