Hey {{first_name | Brew}}

Smoke on the southern peninsula today is a planned burn, not a wildfire, so no need to panic.

Thousands of ladybirds have been washing up along the Western Cape coast, and Franschhoek’s Babylonstoren has just been ranked the 26th-best hotel in the world.

Add Sandi Thom in the winelands, a braai festival and a rum tasting, and your weekend has options.

Here's what's brewing.

Thousands of ladybirds have been turning up along the high-tide line at Strand, Gordon's Bay, Lambert's Bay and Woodbridge Island. The best theory is a rainy spell followed by a hot, dry snap, which sent the beetles hunting for greener pastures. Poor flyers, big breeze.

Seeing smoke in the southern peninsula today? Table Mountain National Park is carrying out a planned fuel reduction burn in the Wildskutsbrand area, not a wildfire. The park's Fire Management Team is clearing built-up vegetation to lower wildfire risk, and visitors and nearby communities are asked to stay aware and take care.

Babylonstoren in Franschhoek has been ranked the 26th-best hotel in the world in Condé Nast Traveler's 2026 Readers' Choice Awards, voted for by nearly 800,000 readers. The world is raving about a farm that's about an hour's drive from Cape Town, and it's easy to forget that when we're not the ones booking it. Maybe it's time for a weekend in our own winelands.

Fact of the Day

Scotland's national animal is the unicorn, which first appeared on the Scottish royal arms in the 1100s under William I.

That's your sip, Brews. Mind the ladybirds.
