Four meteor showers are lined up to light up South African skies over the next six weeks, and this one is worth calendaring: the Piscis Austrinids peak on 28 July with around five meteors an hour visible from 9:30pm, followed by three more showers running into September. Cape Town’s winter darkness and low light pollution on the Peninsula make it one of the best places in the country to catch them.
Thanks to record-breaking winter rain, Namaqualand is building toward one of its most spectacular wildflower superblooms in years, with millions of blooms in pink, orange, yellow and purple set to carpet the Northern Cape from mid-August. The drive up the West Coast from Cape Town is very much part of the experience.
Snake rescuer Wild Marik had a hunch his rescued puff adder was dehydrated after being found in a hot shed, so he gently tilted a water bottle toward it: the snake drank steadily for two minutes before slithering safely back into the wild. Not something you try at home, but exactly the kind of quiet good thing South Africa keeps delivering.

Billy Boy just opened in Sea Point this past week at 140 Main Road, and it's already a vibe, blue lighting, modern interior, the kind of place you'll want to hang around in. The menu keeps it simple: five smash burgers plus a chicken smash that's worth the trip on its own, backed up by five milkshake flavours to pick from.
Ou Meul Newlands opened yesterday, a deli style spot with a coffee bar up front, a bakery case of fresh bread and quiches, and a pantry section stocked with preserves, biltong and chocolates alongside gifts like scented diffusers and body lotions. The breakfast menu is worth lingering over too, think smoked salmon trout rosti or the Full Monty croissant, stuffed with bacon, avo, cheese and egg.
Woodstock Exchange on Albert Road is a converted brewery turned hub for ceramicists, designers, vintage dealers and artists. Free to wander, easy to lose a good hour in, with The Yard coffee bar inside as your reward for staying longer than you planned.
