A shopper at a Woolworths in Gauteng filmed an avocado so large it's since been nicknamed Avozilla, dwarfing everything else on the shelf and sending TikTok into a frenzy. It's a natural cross of West Indian and Guatemalan varieties, no modification involved, weighing three to four times a standard Hass at up to 1.3kg. It's on shelves for one week only at R59.99, so grab one while you can.
The Two Oceans Aquarium said a happy goodbye to Cherry, its beloved common octopus, releasing her back into the ocean at the end of July after she formed a close bond with aquarist Taygan Roberts. Now that Cherry's reached sexual maturity, the release gives her a shot at finding a mate and adding to the Cape coast's next generation. Her tank's already got a new resident, Plum, who'll spend a few months as ocean ambassador before her own turn to head home.
Ayanda Cimoni couldn't swim a few years back. Now he's a qualified commercial diver monitoring marine wildlife along our coastline for the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, proof a late start still counts as a start.

Caramba has been quietly serving proper Portuguese plates on Green Point Main Road for years: butterflied prawns in lemon garlic butter, a steak espatada that arrives dripping, ice-cold Super Bock on tap. Grab a pastel de nata for the road, non-negotiable.
The Pot Luck Club still does small plates better than most, six storeys up an old Woodstock silo with the kind of view that makes the bill, upwards of R500pp, easier to swallow. Order by taste profile, salty through sweet, and share everything.
Kokiyo, tucked into the Canal Walk food court, is turning out proper double-fried Korean chicken, soy garlic or gochujang, crunch fully intact. Cheap, cheerful, and worth the mall parking.

That's your sip, Brews. Go get something fried, grilled, or philosophically Portuguese.
